Important Vocabulary
Stem Cells- the body’s building blocks that create daughter cells.
Pluripotent cells- a cell that can turn into any cell in the human body.
Adult stem cells- found in adult tissue like fat and bone marrow.
Embryonic stem cells- can change into any cell type. They can replace damaged cells and are found in an embryo that is 3 to 5 days old.
Dickey-Wicker Amendment- amendment agents federal funding of research destroying, creating and/or harming embryos.
Perinatal stem cells-stem cells found in amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood. They are extrated through amniocentesis.
Embryos- the first stage of a multicellular organism.
Regenerative medicine- stem cell therapy, that develops the body’s ability to rebuild diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue.
Daughter cells- cells that are the product of mitosis and are specialized cells.
