Stem Cells

Sources of Stem Cells

Embryonic stem cells are one of the many sources of stem cells. They come from 3-5 day old embryos.  They are pluripotent stem cells and can recreate and repair damaged tissue.  Adult stem cells are found in adult tissue and they have limited ability.  An induced pluripotent cell is an adult stem cell programmed to act like an embryonic stem cell. It’s very new to science but could be used to prevent immune system rejection of the new stem cells.  Inducted pluripotent cells have been proven to improve heart function and survival time, in animals with new heart cells. Perinatal stem cells are stem cells found in amniotic fluid or/and umbilical cord blood. They can change into specialized cells.
